Union Budget 2026: A Blueprint for India’s Economic Growth

The Union Budget 2026-27 outlines India’s fiscal and economic priorities for the coming year, balancing growth, fiscal discipline, and structural reforms amid a complex global landscape. The government has projected nominal GDP growth of around 10 % and set a fiscal deficit target of 4.3 % of GDP, slightly lower than the previous year, indicating continued emphasis on fiscal consolidation. Central debt is expected to decline to about 55.6 % of GDP.

A key thrust of the Budget is boosting infrastructure and capital expenditure, with an allocation of approximately ₹12.2 trillion, one of the highest in recent years. This investment aims to strengthen physical connectivity through new high-speed rail corridors and enhanced support for roads, railways and freight networks.

Tax reforms play a central role. The New Income Tax Act, 2025 will come into effect from April 1, 2026, accompanied by simplified rules and forms intended to make compliance easier for taxpayers. Personal income tax slabs remain broadly unchanged, but the Budget proposes targeted reliefs — such as reduced tax collection at source (TCS) on education and foreign travel — and efforts to broaden the tax base while easing filing procedures.

Sectoral priorities include domestic manufacturing and self-reliance, with incentives for semiconductors, biopharma, electronics and rare-earth processing to reduce import dependence and strengthen strategic industries. Special schemes aim to support MSMEs, agriculture, and emerging technology sectors like AI and cloud services, including tax holidays for foreign companies offering cloud services from India.

Defence spending has also been raised significantly, reflecting heightened security concerns, while social and rural development programmes continue to receive substantial funding. Overall, the Budget underscores a blend of growth-oriented investment, regulatory certainty and fiscal prudence to drive long-term economic resilience.
